A good PE programme and a well-run sports day need less equipment than most schools think. What matters is buying the right basics and planning how they are used.

The core equipment

Start with gear that serves many activities. Footballs, volleyballs and basketballs in sizes that suit your students: size 4 footballs for younger children, size 5 for older teens. Cones and markers for drills, relays and race lanes. Skipping ropes, a few mats for warm-ups and stretching, stopwatches and whistles for teachers.

For cricket, beginners need helmets, pads and gloves as well as bats and balls. Sport is safer with a first-aid kit at every session.

Planning a sports day

A sports day does not need a stadium. The school ground or a nearby playground is enough. Pick events that match the space and gear you have: sprints, relays, sack races, long jump and a tug of war.

  • Timetable: run the day in blocks, with warm-up, heats, finals and prize-giving, and give each class a slot.
  • People: put a teacher or senior student in charge of each event, and another in charge of returning equipment.
  • Recognition: medals, certificates or small trophies for winners motivate students far more than they cost.

Brief parents before the day on the schedule and safety arrangements. Many will volunteer.

Building a PE programme that lasts

Treat PE as a regular subject, not an extra. Plan the term in themes: running technique, ball skills, team games, fitness. Teachers who are not sports specialists can learn a lot from a short coaching workshop, and local club coaches are often happy to visit.

Look after the kit. Store balls in a dry room, wipe mats after use and check everything once a week. Equipment lasts years when someone owns the job.

Buying equipment

Buying in bulk lowers the cost per item. Government schools can order through the GeM portal; private schools can buy direct. Seeing the stock before you buy helps you judge quality.

MDF Enterprises in Srinagar supplies sports equipment to schools across J&K, and medals and trophies for sports day. It takes bulk and GeM orders and delivers to every district.
