Cricket is the most played sport in the valley, from tennis-ball games in the lanes to JKCA age-group competitions. Schools and clubs are where most players learn the game properly.
Running a school or club programme
Regular play is what builds cricketers. A weekly practice with nets and a short match keeps players sharp and lets coaches track form. Partner with a nearby club to share grounds and give younger players games against stronger sides.
A flat, well-kept practice surface matters. Where there is no turf pitch, a cricket turf mat gives a consistent bounce and is safer for batters than uneven ground.
The pathway
The Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) runs age-group cricket and selects state teams for national competitions such as the Vinoo Mankad Trophy (under-19) and senior events up to the Ranji Trophy. Ask your district association about trials and registration, and keep players' age documents ready.
Kashmir willow or English willow?
Kashmir is one of the world's two main sources of cricket bat willow, and bat making is a local industry. Kashmir willow bats are heavier and harder, cost less and suit tennis-ball cricket, beginners and practice. English willow is lighter, gives more ping off the middle and is the choice for serious leather-ball cricket.
Size matters more than brand for juniors. A bat that is too long or heavy ruins technique. Let the player hold a few and check they can lift and swing it comfortably.
Safety kit
Every batter facing a leather ball needs a helmet with a grille, pads, gloves and an abdominal guard. Keep enough sets for a full practice, in sizes that fit. Clean and dry kit after use and store it somewhere dry to stop mould.
Where to buy
