Gulmarg is India's best-known ski resort and has hosted the Khelo India Winter Games several times. For young athletes in Kashmir, that means national competition in skiing and snowboarding on slopes close to home.
Why the Games matter
The Games give young skiers and snowboarders a national stage and a clear target to train for. Watching the best athletes in the country shows local students and coaches the standard they are aiming for, and good results can open doors to national camps.
Learning to ski and snowboard
Gulmarg has beginner slopes near the village and much bigger terrain higher up, reached by the Gulmarg Gondola. Beginners should take lessons from a qualified instructor and stay on gentle slopes until they can stop and turn with control.
Renting skis, boots or a snowboard at first is sensible. It lets you try different sizes before buying, and children outgrow boots quickly.
When to go
The main season runs from around December to March, with the most reliable snow usually in January and February. Snowfall varies year to year, so check conditions before travelling, and book accommodation early in peak weeks and when competitions are on.
Staying safe
- Wear a helmet; snowboarders should add wrist guards.
- Dress in layers: a base layer that wicks sweat, an insulating middle layer and a windproof, waterproof shell.
- Ski within your ability, stay on marked runs, and respect avalanche warnings.
- Get skis and boards serviced before the season.
Training off the snow
Strong legs and a stable core make skiing safer and more fun. Squats, lunges, balance work and steady cardio through autumn prepare athletes for the season, and a school or home gym is enough for this work.
Where to buy
For off-season conditioning, MDF Enterprises in Srinagar sells gym and fitness equipment for homes, schools and clubs, from dumbbells and benches to treadmills and full gym fit-outs.
