A good gym is space that works, equipment that lasts and a routine people stick to. Whether you are a parent clearing a corner of a spare room or a principal planning a dedicated hall, the basics are the same.
Choosing the space
Measure first. A room of about 3 by 3.5 metres holds a bench, a set of free weights and a mat for floor work. A school hall can take cardio machines, a squat rack and a circuit area. Leave clear space around every piece so people can move and lift without bumping into each other or a wall.
Kashmir winters are cold, so pick a room that can be heated. Check the floor can take dropped weights; on concrete or tiles, lay rubber gym flooring first. It protects the floor, cuts noise and stops equipment sliding.
A home gym that covers most needs
For families, versatility matters more than size. Adjustable dumbbells or a few pairs of hex dumbbells cover most strength work. Add an adjustable bench that stores upright against a wall, a yoga mat and a set of resistance bands. If there is budget and room for cardio, a treadmill or an exercise bike lets you train when snow keeps you indoors.
A school or club gym
Institutions need durability and capacity. A steel squat rack with safety bars, a barbell and rubber-coated Olympic plates make a strength area many students can share. A multi-station gym lets several people train at once with less supervision than free weights. For cardio, a couple of treadmills, an elliptical cross trainer and a few exercise bikes give students a choice.
Plan storage from the start. Dumbbell racks, plate trees and a shelf for mats keep the floor clear and reduce trips. A whiteboard on one wall is enough for posting the day's workout.
Looking after the equipment
Damp and dust are the main problems in the valley. Wipe sweat off metal and upholstery after each session, and clean rubber surfaces with mild soap once a week. On treadmills, keep the belt clean and check its tension and alignment as the manual describes. Check the bolts on racks, benches and machines every few months and tighten anything loose. Keep weights on their racks, not on the floor.
For a school, give one staff member the job of a weekly check, and keep a simple log of faults and repairs.
